BEN FARRALES

Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014

Philippine Fashion Week gives tribute to legendary designer Ben Farrales, or “Manong Ben” as his friends and clients in the industry fondly call him, as it presents Ben Farrales: A Retrospective as this season’s finale.

The first-ever Filipino designer to launch a show at the Manila Hotel, Farrales’ first gala fashion show, Romance 1959, left such a dramatic impact that it demanded an encore the following year. Since then, Farrales has staged successful fashion presentations, locally and internationally, one after another.

Today, he is hailed the Dean of Filipino Fashion, and is often praised for his brilliance and ingenuity in reworking Filipino costumes, altering the lines and volume of the traditional Maria Clara and Kimona. He was also one of the first to use Philippine ethnic fabric, reworking local materials from the Tiboli to the Igorot weave, with such brilliance and imagination, attracting even an international clientele for his designs. Lastly, he is most known for his Muslim-inspired designs and exotic color combinations, weaving together tribal elements and indigenous materials to turn into haute couture.

Finally, after gaining much success and recognition abroad, Farrales then focused on sustaining the Philippine fashion industry, staging fund-raising and charity projects that featured the works of up-and-coming designers, which at the same time, helped out the less fortunate, too.

Indeed, having changed the landscape of the Philippine fashion scene, inspiring and helping designers, and many individuals along the way, Philippine Fashion Week presents a grand, nostalgic show in Ben Farrales: A Retrospective.

Lee SS 2014: Stay Curious

Lee

Lee SS 2014

Lee Spring-Summer 2014 collection highlights the power of curiosity

There is power that lies in curiosity. It is the force that drives artists to try new ways of creating art to discover their own style. People find exciting destinations by turning an unfamiliar corner. These are just some of the reasons why everyone chooses to Stay Curious.

It is this exact passion to explore new territories that denim brand Lee harnessed during the Lee Jeans Philippine Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2014 show where it showcased denim innovations to mark its 125th year of superb craftsmanship, once again pushing boundaries while staying true to its proud heritage.

Lee

Lee SS 2014

The SM Mall of Asia Atrium was transformed to simulate the streets of New York and put the audience at the heart of the scene. The audience is left curious as the models walked the runway though unexpected synchronicity, turning corners, to give everyone a closer look of the collection’s detail. Pieces that highlight denim engineering and elevate the structure of jeans were presented, together with colorful pieces inspired by digital technology. The collection also showcased Union Made Lee101+ which celebrates the brand’s signature denim pieces.

The Lee Stretch Deluxe was also unveiled, featuring jeans made of quality Italian fabric with an improved stretch ability and an enhanced shape recovery for an even leaner and flattering fit.

Watch out for more denim innovations at Lee Concept stores. Stay curious!

Penshoppe SS 2014

Penshoppe

Penshoppe
Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014

Giving new meaning to summery prints, designs reminiscent of blooming, tropical fields took center stage in Penshoppe’s casual wear line-up for both men and women. Floral and leafy patterns graciously softened otherwise boxy structures of loose-fitting pieces also included in the anthology. Add in a refreshing twist to color-blocking—putting together cool and delicate hues of pink, blue, and green—and the result was a welcome amalgamation of radical yet current looks for the season.

Clearly, its Spring/Summer 2014 presentation showed the label’s attempt to take on a bolder style standpoint. “With this collection, Penshoppe really went all-out to bare its take on the sunny season,” Bascon pointed out. “But the underlying goal still is to stay true to the global fashion movement; while, at the same time, give way to local and practical relevance. For instance, comfort is still a key consideration in all our designs and an element that is never compromised, given our tropical climate.”

He concluded, “Penshoppe’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection is definitely very relevant, very ‘now’. By presenting the season’s latest prints, hues, and silhouettes in a new light, we offer refreshing ways for the wearer to amp up his or her wardrobe. Ultimately, though, the goal is for them to be able to ‘wear’ their unique style sense and let the clothes enhance or convey it in a season-appropriate manner.”

Indeed, with its latest repertoire, Penshoppe has undoubtedly taken Spring/Summer 2014 out for a bold and exciting spin—and every style-setter is invited to join the ride.
